[...] What’s the latest on your film based on Saadat Hasan Manto’s Toba Tek Singh? After acquiring the rights, we
began working on the script that has the three-page story as its premise. The film is a tragi-comedy exploring who is actually crazy, when lunatics in
asylums were asked to choose which country they’d like to live in, just before the Partition. Psychiatrists didn’t know how to explain the
concept of democratic choice to the lunatics and finally, they exchanged lunatics randomly. When the exchange bus reaches the no man’s land,
there’s a twist in the tale, what with the lunatics giving shape to their own plans. While doing the research, we found that there are still
many 80-year-old lunatics in asylums who had gone through a similar crisis during independence. During the pre-Partition era, all asylums in India had
a number of British inmates. Some had mental imbalance due to sickness from staying in India or even from heat strokes. Sixty per cent of the film
will be in English and the rest in Hindi.
Reports say you have zeroed in on Aamir Khan and Kate Winslet... That was
fast-forwarded news in print. I have spoken to Aamir, but he hasn’t read the script yet. We had met at the Jaipur literary festival. My wishlist
also includes Irrfan. Toba Tek, which is the working title, requires good actors. We have the necessary support from investors and producers to hire
Hollywood actors. My agents are in touch with Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz’s agents and their feedback has been positive. I’ll only begin
meeting them from June/July.
When do you begin shooting? n That would be from October/November. We plan to shoot in
Gujarat and Rajasthan, where we are looking for a huge complex that can be turned into a mental institution.
