"Aamir gives everyone respect and actually listens when you speak." - Monica Dogra

How did you go from singing industrial rock to landing a role in a Hindi film?

Kiran Rao had seen my music video on VH1 and thought I might be good for the role, so someone contacted me while I was on tour in London. I love acting. I’ve studied it... I thought I had something to offer.

What is your role in Dhobi Ghat about?

My character is dynamic and varied, and I can relate to her many layers. I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to divulge. Let’s just say that my character is not at all your typical leading lady in a film. What I love about Kiran’s script is that she really stayed as authentic as she could... she tells a very real story.

Did you have any preconceived notions about shooting for a Hindi film?

I didn’t have any as I had no reference point really.

Kiran Rao is said to be a hard taskmaster...

She’s great. She’s an individual - and more importantly, she knows what she wants and how she would like it executed. In many ways, I was eager to please her and satisfy her vision... these are qualities that I don’t usually possess. I’m pretty tough and fierce in my own execution of my own vision. She brings a lot of passion into what she does.

And Prateik Babbar?

Prateik grew on me. When we first met, my attitude was, “Yeah okay... let’s see about this one. Not so sure.” But we became good friends, and have kept in touch since the film wrapped up. He’s not like a lot of the Bollywood people I meet. He’s really down to earth, and super quirky.

The film was shot in guerrilla fashion, with hidden cameras. Did that pose a challenge?

It was exciting and harrowing at the same time. We would have to dodge crowds, drive around for an hour or two, and quickly get through a scene with cameras rolling. And the whole time, you’d have to stay in character because you weren’t sure what was being filmed when. But, when I saw the rushes, I was blown away by the authenticity of the footage. There were moments when I had no idea where my character ended and I began. I was there in these crowded, hot, intense situations, and I was discovering Mumbai - and loving it - in a way I never had before.

Aamir Khan had to be smuggled in to the sets, we hear. Were you comfortable with the presence of a star like him on the sets?

I really understood what stars go through when I met him. There would be hordes of people gathered for hours and hours outside just to catch a glimpse of him. But, when you meet him, he’s unaffected. He gives everyone respect and actually listens when you speak. I approached him as I would any actor I was working with and did my best to ignore the mystique that surrounds him.

Will Shaa’ir + Func make music for Bollywood in the future?

There are no Bollywood plans on the cards.
