BANGALORE: The Bahai community released a memorandum signed by 32 prominent Indians demanding the immediate release of Bahai members detained
illegally in Iran’s Evin prison for over a year without trial. Speaking at the press conference, Achamma Sudhakaran, Auxiliary board member
of Bahai community in Karnataka said the Bahai community, being the largest minority in Iran has been subjected to arbitrary detentions, false
imprisonment, denial of employment and access to higher education.
“The documented plan of the Iranian government has always been to
destroy the Bahai community and these arrests are just a tool to reach that goal,” Achamma said. “Even UN had condemned Iran on the
increasing instances of injustice against the Bahai community in the country. Of the seven detained members, two are women and their lawyer, noble
laureate Shirin Ebadi, has not been allowed to meet with them,” she added. The memorandum was signed by prominent Indians from all walks of
life such as former chief justice, SC, Justice JS Verma, former attorney-general Soli J Sorabjee, Tahir Mahmood from law commission, actor Aamir
Khan, IIM Director SK Barua, besides many religious heads.
