Aamir Khan is all set with his new release 3 Idiots today. It is the most awaited film of the year which also stars Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena
Kapoor and Boman Irani. We spoke to Aamir Khan on his film and working with the crew of 3 Idiots… At the age of 40, playing a college student - how tough or easy was it? (Laughs) I agree but I have made it clear with the director and producer that they are taking a chance by casting me as a 20 year old guy in the film. But Raju told me that the character Rancho was like me. We argued a lot on this. But I had liked the story. Plus, Raju and I wanted to work with each other. Two days before the shoot started in Bangalore; I even called Raju and Vinod and told them that they could change their decision. But they didn't want to. Raju told me that when I did Sarfarosh, nobody thought I could pull off the role of an ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police), or that I could play a tapori in Rangeela. Nobody thought I could play a villager in Lagaan or have a physique like that in Ghajini. So he said that I had taken up these challenges in the past, and should take up another challenge. Plus, I had already worked on my body to look younger and leaner. So what have you done to manage the look of a college boy? When I do a film, I get involved completely. I can't explain how I do it. When I was offered Ghajini, my director Murgadoss told me that I should look like a body builder with six pack abs!! I wondered how I would achieve that kind of a body within a year. It was impossible. But when I started, something started happening in my head and I started getting transformed. So same happened with me in 3 Idiots. See my point is when you think you have to do it then only you can do it. Never think or say I can’t do it. Kareena Kapoor is sizzling with you in the film, this is for the first time you both are cast together. What you think of her as an actress? She is gorgeous; she is beautiful no doubt she is a great actress too. I have seen her how she gets into the role and wanted to give her 100%. She is so beautiful that you don’t get tired working the whole day with her. She is smart and intelligent too. I have liked her work all along and have wanted to work with her. You are known to be the marketing genius and again for 3 Idiots you have done something novel. So how useful will this marketing stunt help to support the success of your new film 3 Idiots? I don't know. This was an idea which I liked and I did. I don't know what kind of results such a marketing plan will generate. This is something that has never been done by any actor in the world. You cannot stop running a good film and also you cannot run a bad film. Audiences are not fools may be because of much promotion the crowd will be their in the first weekend but later it shows. I don’t want my film to run only for one weekend. I wanted them to be remembered for a lifetime. When you decided to go to all these places, was the plan as to what you'd be talking pre-decided? I never planned what to talk to people because I never knew who I was supposed to meet. I went to Varanasi because my mother spent her childhood days there. But earlier, I decided to sleep at Varanasi's railway platform the entire night because our railways bind the whole country. I wanted to interact with the people on their life, their city and their railways. So, one thing led to another and thus began a journey filled with memories which I'll never forget. I was suppose to spend my day at the railway station but landed up walking the streets of Telianaka in Varanasi. Zoobie Doobie has different looks. Did you have any inputs? I did whatever the director said. Raju has conceived this song. I was doubtful whether it would work initially but Raju was very confident. He broke the scenes in his mind and has done a wonderful job in it. He wanted a fairytale feel for the song because it's from Kareena's point of view. Everything in the song is happening in Kareena's head. How will you describe Raju Hirani as a director and Vidhu Vinod Chopra as a producer? Both are great. I guess 3 idiots belongs to the director first Raju Hirani. He is someone really great. I don’t know how many times I have watched Munnabhai. And always wanted to work with him. He is a great storyteller and knows what audience will like. He is one of the finest directors I have worked ever. With so much talent in him. Vidhu on the other hand is a great producer he give his cast and crew a big space. And doesn’t interfere in direction work at all. I guess we altogether made a good team. Never the less my co-stars were great too. Sharman Joshi and Madhavan with whom I have worked earlier are great actors. They are some actors who performed the characters who don’t believe in fame. Which I like about them. They do their work. Boman Irani is a wonderful actor and a great co-star. I had to copy him for a few seconds. I'm not a very good mimic but when Raju told me to act like Boman, I said I would try. I think I have done a good job. - StarBoxOffice.com
