‘My friends think I am an idiot’

Posted by admin | 343 Views

It was the best New Year gift for all Kolkatans when the king of hearts Aamir Khan arrived in town to celebrate the roaring success of his latest box office hit 3 Idiots along with crew and other cast members of the film. Here's an excerpt of a conversation:

How did you get the idea going incognito and traveling all over India to market 3 Idiots? How was the
experience in Kolkata?

The idea of going incognito came from the film itself. The main protagonist (Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad) that was played by me disappears one day and then his friends go looking for him in the film. So I thought let Aamir Khan go missing and let the people and the media, who are my friends find me out. I told this idea to Vidhu (Vinod Chopra) first and he thought it could be a good idea in promoting the film.

The experience was fabulous and very enriching as I got to meet different kinds of people and got to know their customs and traditions. I also went without disguise to the weavers whose work is overlooked by us and to a girl’s school in Gujarat to promote women’s education. I learnt about the lifestyle and problems of grass root people which I never knew earlier.

Kolkata was special for me because I got to interact with Dada (Sourav Ganguly) and his family. I found out that Dada is not only a good sportsman but a good person by heart. The food at his place was great and I especially loved the rasogollas!

Chetan Bhagat is miffed with 3 Idiots team? Do you think he hasn’t been given his due?

Oh! Why waste time on talking about that publicity hungry man! It is very unfortunate that Chetan is behaving in this manner; we too are very upset with him. His name is there in the credit lines rolling at the end of the film. The film is two to three per cent similar to his book 5 Point Someone. You know who is Abhijaat Joshi? He is the script writer of Munnabhai and 3 Idiots. He is the one who worked on the script of our film for the past three years. But no one will pay heed to him because he is not as popular as Chetan Bhagat.

By the way one day Chetan came to our sets and guess what he told me when I said I haven’t read his novel. “Aamir you need not read the book because the script is absolutely different from what is there in it!” Chetan is trying to hijack Abhijaats’s credit just because the film is a hit now and we will not let it happen at all. He has been already given what was promised to him.

Why did you take up this role in 3 Idiots? What is your perception of an idiot?
Whenever I take up any film I try to see if there is newness in the story or not. I think I am a student of cinema and every film should teach me something new. The role of 3 Idiots was challenging and I could associate myself with the role too. Since I did not go to college, the film also made me experience college life. The days spent in Bangalore were full of fun.

I feel that an idiot is someone who is always misunderstood by people. He is unique and he always takes the road less traveled and hence called an idiot. However, when he succeeds people acknowledge his work and appreciate him. I am myself called an idiot by my friends for doing unconventional films but later on they are the ones who pat my back!

3 Idiots has criticised the education system. Do you feel the Indian education system should change? If you were a teacher what subject would you teach?
The education system in India should improve, like children should not be turned into puppets and asked to memorise everything. They should think with an open mind and allowed to ask a lot of questions. Our education minister Kapil Sibal is trying to make amends in our education system and I am sure he will do some progressive work.

Well, if I were a teacher then I might have taught physics as I am very interested in science. Once I had thought opening an acting school to teach cinema.

How was it being directed by your wife Kiran Rao in the film Dhobi Ghat?
This is Kiran’s debut film and I think she has done a fantastic job, you will see when the film releases. She is very clear in her perception and knows what she wants. She had precision and planning from the first day of the shoot.

Have you seen any Bengali films? Do you intend to do a Bengali film anytime?
I met Prosenjit (Chatterje) a couple of months back and asked him to send me some DVDs of Bengali movies. It’s important to understand the culture before you do a regional film. Right now I don’t have any plans of doing Bengali films.

In which avatar do we see you next?
You will see me as one of the main protagonists of Dhobi Ghat. The film is slated to release in second half of 2010 (and not December 25, laughs). The film is in post production stage. I am not signing any new films in 2010 but as I will be releasing Dhobi Ghaat, Delhi Belly and Peepli Live as a producer. Right now I want take a break for a few months and go on a holiday with my family. I will read a lot of stories and go through scripts before I take up any project.

Rapid fire

Dream role: I was always intrigued by the character of Karna in Mahabharata. If a film is made on the epic I will love to play the part of Karna.

Favourite look: I worked hard to get the rugged look in Ghajini so it is quite close to me and I am also fond of my appearance in Mangal Pandey with those big moustaches.

Favourite films and actors: It’s strange but I don’t see too many movies. The last Hindi film I saw was Oye, Lucky, Lucky Oye. Actually, I have the habit of reading more books than watching films. When I was a child I was allowed to watch one film in six months and that too very selective ones. I wasn’t allowed to see Bobby when it came! Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan are my all time favorite actors.

New Year resolution: After my Bharat Darshan trip and tasting a variety of delicious cuisines all across the country I feel that I have become very fat. My resolution this year would be to lose weight and get back in shape (winks)!
