Aamir Khan refuses to be bound by conventions. In his forthcoming film, 3 Idiots, the 44-year-old plays a 20-year-old management student. Not surprising, as he is one Bollywood actor who believes in taking up challenges, on screen and off it. Whether it is to raise his voice in support of Narmada Bachao Andolan or demand that Kiran Bedi be appointed as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), Khan actively involves himself in various social causes. However, he has steered clear of politics till now and tells Meena Iyer that it doesn’t excite him. Excerpts from the interview

So tell us, where did a ramp debut at 44 come from? “Arrey, kuch nahin hai, I am very embarrassed to do all this ramp walk, honestly, I am not built for this sort of stuff! Salman is a friend, and he has been working on this charity organisation for some time now, and has been requesting my help to raise funds for it. This was one of the ways to raise funds. Since it was for a good cause, I agreed, but the ramp is quite awkward for me. Aap beech mein chal rahe ho, sab log aapko dekh rahe hain... I’m not cut out for it! And I normally don’t do it, but if it is helping people, I don’t

As part of the marketing blitzkrieg of 3 Idiots, the makers have released a booklet especially for media publicity titled How To Be An Idiot! The Complete Idiot's Guide To Life. It contains notes penned by producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, director Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan among other stuff about the movie. I am the biggest idiot: Aamir

It seems like the 'pucca idiot' effect. Actor Aamir Khan appears to be in no mood to stir up the Khan war again, especially with Shah Rukh Khan, as his next movie 3 Idiots gears up to open this Christmas Day.
"I am not the emperor. Instead, I am a joker, I am the biggest idiot," he said when asked for a reaction on being called 'the emperor of Bollywood' - that clearly puts him above the 'King' Khan SRK - by his 3 Idiots' co-star Kareena Kapoor.

His looks defy the age his birth certificate reflects. Yet 44-years-old Aamir Khan felt “acutely conscious and uncomfortable” playing a 22-year-old college student in his upcoming movie 3 Idiots, set to hit screens on December 24. Sporting a casual tee with cargo pants and sipping chai on the couch at his hotel room in Delhi, Aamir shared his thoughts with HT City.

'Salman and I have come closer'

Apparently there was a time many years ago when Shah Rukh, Salman and you used to meet as a trio, hang out together. What happened? Yes, we used to hang out together. Over the years, Salman and I have come closer. We have grown fond of each other. We have respect and regard for each other. We enjoy each other's company. In fact, we hang out more than we used to earlier. Not daily, but often. Shah Rukh and I have, over the years, not hung out together so much. We meet every now and then. Again, I have a lot of respect for Shah Rukh as a star, and find his films entertaining.

I still imagine myself to be 18 or 22. The other day I was at the birthday of someone who I had always thought of as older than me in my head, an uncle type person. I asked him, how old he was that day and he said 30 and I got a shock because suddenly I realized that I was 14 years older than him. I am, of course, 44, which is middle-aged, but somewhere in my head I am lost in the 18-20 age group.

At the press conference held for an NGO called ADR (Association of Democratic Reform) Aamir Khan was very candid on his views about the upcoming Loksabha elections and many things related to politics. Here is a brief tête-à-tête with the actor-filmmaker.
Do you think voting must be made compulsory? Yes I do think that voting must be made compulsory. I think in Australia it is mandatory for everyone to vote. We should try it here too.

As a birthday treat to himself, I think, Aamir Khan took two evenings off from work this week and drove into town to catch the classical music concerts of Zubin Mehta and the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra with virtuoso Chinese pianist Lang Lang. I met him after the second show on Thursday night, over salad and coffee at India Jones, that’s all he was having.
It’s not that Aamir has eclectic tastes in food as well as music, he’s in the middle of Raju Hirani’s film 3 Idiots and

Believe it or not, the actor turns 44 today! The superstar decodes his personal milestones and more with DNA
Aamir Khan turns 44 today! What have been your personal milestones? The first milestone would be when I decided to get into films. I was 15 or 16 at that time and Aditya (film-maker Basu Bhattacharya’s son) was my classmate then. He wanted to make a short film called Paranoia. I just helped him out and I realised that this was where I wanted to be. That film never was released; I am sure the television channels would be interested in showing it now.
And then at the age of 21, I got married to Rina. That was 1986
